SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–California Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery (CalDerm), the leading voice for Dermatologists, announced the launch of the Firefighter Skin Cancer Prevention Screening Program in California in partnership with the Firefighters Cancer Support Network.\n<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\nCalDerm, alongside our partners at the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, is pleased to utilize the framework built by their professional colleagues in Boston and offer their expertise in skin cancer prevention and screenings to firefighters on the firelines in California. Recent studies have demonstrated that firefighters are 9% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and 14% more likely to die of cancer compared with age-matched cohorts.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cFire seasons in California, especially Northern California, are longer each year, requiring that firefighters have lengthened exposure to the most hazardous carcinogens that cause Melanoma,\u201d said Dr. Ann Haas, Board Member, CalDerm. \u201cAnnual screenings are central to the health of firefighters, especially since recent studies have shown that firefighters can be diagnosed with melanoma up to 14 years after continued exposure.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nCalDerm\u2019s Firefighter Skin Prevention Screening Program will teach the signs and symptoms of skin cancer and provide free skin cancer screenings. Taking place on August 20-21, 2022, at the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District in Truckee, California, Dermatologists are proud to volunteer their time to protect those that protect our communities.\n<\/p>\n
