\n\u201cAfter COVID-19 stole the spotlight from many other pressing global public health issues \u2013 it\u2019s vital that we keep the attention on HIV\/AIDS and other aspects of health equity that affect millions of people around the world,\u201d said AHF Chief of Global Advocacy and Policy Terri Ford. \u201cFor example, this conference, which was supposed to bring together the most experienced and passionate HIV\/AIDS activists representing countries with the worst disease burden, could not even get into the country [Canada]. Those advocates fight for our most vulnerable populations and people with no voice. The stark contrast of how people in the Global North are treated compared to the Global South is unacceptable and a significant detriment to the world\u2019s ability to end the \u2018other pandemic\u2019 in HIV\/AIDS.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nOther discussion topics will include the insufficient global response to the worldwide monkeypox outbreak, which recently, although woefully delayed, has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization. Advocates will also highlight the fact that HIV\/AIDS is still a significant global public health crisis\u2014which is responsible for 650,000 deaths every year globally\u2014and requires a serious commitment from wealthy countries to ensure a successful, fast-approaching Seventh Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to UNAIDS, there were over 38 million people living with HIV in 2021, including 1.5 million people who newly acquired the virus. Since the AIDS epidemic\/pandemic started, more than 40 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses.\n<\/p>\n
