\nThe family-friendly 5K walk is one of the largest in Georgia, with 10,000 participants, and will be held on Saturday, October 19 at Centennial Olympic Park. In the past decade, the event has raised more than $15 million for research to accelerate life-changing scientific breakthroughs in preventing, treating and curing type 1 diabetes (T1D). More than 40,000 people in the U.S. are annually diagnosed with T1D and less than one-third achieve target blood glucose levels, putting them at risk for health complications.\n<\/p>\n

\nT1D is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person\u2019s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables the human body to convert food into energy it needs to function. It occurs when the body\u2019s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. While its causes are not entirely understood, scientists believe genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved, and its onset often has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cEach year, more than 1,000 Georgians are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes \u2013 both children and adults,\u201d explains Sara Orrell, executive director JDRF Georgia Chapter. \u201cWe are thankful for the metro Atlanta community, our volunteers, donors and local sponsors for their continued support.
