However, understanding the molecular reasons behind how the device works remained unknown until now. The research, led by Feinstein Institutes\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Ffeinstein.northwell.edu%2Finstitutes-researchers%2Four-researchers%2Fsangeeta-chavan-phd&amp;esheet=52936661&amp;newsitemid=20221005005141&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=Sangeeta+Chavan%2C+PhD&amp;index=4&amp;md5=845db48a1d3525c0cc706261b0c0256a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" shape=\"rect\">Sangeeta Chavan, PhD<\/a>, showed in preclinical mice models that HFES inhibits neuroinflammatory mediator release by sensory neurons, called nociceptors, to reduce pain.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cFor your body to feel pain, neurons release molecules that kickstart the body\u2019s immune response causing inflammation and pain. High-frequency stimulation therapies have shown to be effective in reducing pain, but the \u2018how\u2019 it works remained in question,\u201d said Dr. Chavan, professor at the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Ffeinstein.northwell.edu%2Finstitutes-researchers%2Fbioelectronic-medicine&amp;esheet=52936661&amp;newsitemid=20221005005141&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=Institute+of+Bioelectronic+Medicine&amp;index=5&amp;md5=80b71090ed8409d11f2819793fc661c8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" shape=\"rect\">Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine<\/a> at the Feinstein Institutes. \u201cThis study reveals a previously unidentified mechanism for the pain-modulating effect of HFES, which seems to reset sensory neurons by stopping the release of neuroinflammatory molecules, resulting in less inflammation and pain.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe team uses optogenetics \u2013 light to control the activity of neurons \u2013 along with pharmacologic and injury-related activation of nociceptors measured the release of calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP), substance P and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), which are pro-inflammatory molecules. The results show that HFES lessens neuroinflammatory mediator release by activated sensory neurons, which suggests that HFES could be used as a preventative therapy for those at high-risk for chronic pain.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cChronic pain can limit a person\u2019s daily activities and is associated with reduced work productivity, anxiety and depression, suicide and overall reduced quality of life.
