\nNew NIH Study Indicates Link Between Chemical Hair Relaxers and Uterine Cancer, Other Serious Health Problems<\/i>\n<\/p>\n

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A Case for Women LLC, a mission-driven organization focused on educating women about civil legal action, is increasing its efforts to inform women about dangerous styling products and the hair relaxer lawsuit<\/a>. By partnering with national law firms known for taking on large defendants, A Case for Women hopes to make high quality, contingency-fee based legal assistance accessible to women who used hair relaxer products and have been diagnosed with uterine cancer. There is no out-of-pocket cost to review a potential case.\n<\/p>\n

\nA study released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in October 2022 uncovered a dangerous reality: frequent use of chemical hair straighteners can increase the risk of uterine cancer by two to three times. According to the study, women who reported using hair straightening products were twice as likely to develop uterine cancer as those who did not. Additionally, the study noted that approximately 60% of participants self-identified as Black women. The study\u2019s findings are consistent with prior reports that also show the same link between chemical hair straighteners and an increased risk of hormone-related cancers in women.\n<\/p>\n

\nBlack women tend to be at higher risk for uterine cancer related to hair relaxer products due to the heavy use and early adoption of hair relaxer products in the community. According to NBC News, approximately 95% of Black women report using chemical hair straightening products. Many of these women also report beginning use of the products in early childhood, sometimes as young as five or six years old and continuing regularly through adulthood.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWomen have struggled to conform to our society\u2019s standards of beauty for generations, and it\u2019s literally killing us,\u201d said Susan Knape, president of A Case for Women. \u201cHair straighteners are another in a long line of unsafe products that have been marketed to women to make us feel better when in fact they can be fatal: talcum powder, Essure birth control, and now hair relaxers have all proven to be dangerous.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nThere is also evidence to suggest that beauty companies, such as L\u2019Oreal, specifically targeted Black women when marketing hair relaxer products.\n<\/p>\n
