VANCOUVER, British Columbia–(BUSINESS WIRE)–STEMCELL Technologies is proud to announce its President and CEO, Dr. Allen Eaves, has been appointed to the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada.\n<\/p>\n

\nOne of the nation\u2019s highest forms of recognition, the Order of Canada recognizes people who make extraordinary contributions to Canadian society.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cBeing appointed to the Order of Canada is an honour of a lifetime, and I am grateful for the countless colleagues, mentors, friends, and family members who supported me throughout my career,\u201d Dr. Eaves said. \u201cWhile I consider myself a physician-scientist and entrepreneur, I am also a proud Canadian at heart and feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in this country doing what I love: advancing science with the hope of creating a better world.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nBorn in Ottawa and raised in Nova Scotia, Dr. Eaves obtained his undergraduate degree in biology from Acadia University, his medical degree from Dalhousie University and his PhD in medical biophysics from the University of Toronto. He specialized in internal medicine and medical oncology in Toronto and Vancouver following which he became a research scholar for what is now known as Michael Smith Health Research BC. In 1985, Dr. Eaves was appointed Head of Clinical Hematology at the University of British Columbia, the Vancouver General Hospital, and the BC Cancer Agency where he served for 18 years and focused on building one of Canada\u2019s first and largest bone marrow transplant programs. He has served on many boards and committees for various medical and scholarly societies throughout his decades-long career and co-authored more than 200 articles in leading scientific journals.\n<\/p>\n

\nIn 1981, Dr. Eaves co-founded the Terry Fox Laboratory for Hematology\/Oncology Research where he served as Director for 25 years. In 1993, he founded STEMCELL Technologies by mortgaging his home and has since grown it into Canada’s largest biotechnology company with over 2000 employees who develop cutting-edge products and services for the global life sciences community.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cOver the years, Dr. Eaves has made enormous contributions to the advancement of science and has been at the forefront of the biotech industry here in Canada and around the world,\u201d said Dr. Sharon Louis, Senior Vice President, Research and Development, STEMCELL. \u201cThroughout his extraordinary career, he has also mentored many scientists, including myself, and continues to inspire all of us to meet high standards of quality and scientific rigour, while having lots of fun along the way.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
