\nLeo is a fourth grader at Grand Canyon Private Academy, a new private online school in Arizona that serves students in grades K-11. He transferred in from a traditional brick-and-mortar school where he was subject to vicious bullying, amplified by teachers and administrators who didn\u2019t deal with it properly.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cAt my other school I was bullied really bad every day, and nobody at the school even cared,\u201d Leo said. \u201cAnd it was hard to focus on school work, plus they didn\u2019t even think I could do the work. They didn\u2019t even give me a chance to show them I wasn\u2019t stupid. I really am smart, and I like to work hard and get good grades.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nLeo would get so upset in class that he would be sent to the counselor\u2019s office, where he would be told to \u201cplay with sand\u201d while the child who was bullying him carried on with his day.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cI couldn\u2019t even write a sentence when I left there,\u201d Leo said. \u201cNow I write whole pages\u2026the teacher I have now doesn\u2019t feel sorry for me and doesn\u2019t give up on me.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nLeo\u2019s story is not unique. In a survey of parents with children enrolled in Grand Canyon Private Academy\u2019s parent network, K12, more than 35 percent of parents cited safety and mental health concerns as the primary reason for enrolling their child in online schools. And according to the National Bullying Prevention Center, 85 percent of students reporting bullying were bullied on school grounds or property.\n<\/p>\n
