\nOne year after sending relief supplies to Ukraine, Northwell Health readies aid <\/i>for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria and announces relief fund<\/i>\n<\/p>\n

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Standing with medical providers of Turkish and Syrian descent, Michael J. Dowling<\/a>, Northwell Health\u2019s president and CEO, today announced that the heath system is sending 22 palettes of needed medical and disaster relief supplies to the devastated regions after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on February 6 that claimed more than 48,000 lives and left millions displaced.\n<\/p>\n

\nWith Reyhan Ozgur, Consul General of the Republic of Turkey, on hand at Northwell\u2019s Integrated Distribution Center in Bethpage, NY, this announcement comes a day shy of the one-year anniversary of Northwell sending humanitarian relief<\/a> supplies in support of health providers in Ukraine at the start of a war waged by Russian forces.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe\u2019re all part of one global family,\u201d Mr. Dowling said. \u201cAnd when there\u2019s one part of the family in severe distress, we as a health care organization have to be concerned about people in other parts of the world.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nAs with Ukraine relief, Northwell is working with longstanding partner Medshare<\/a> to transport supplies from New York into the affected regions. In addition, Northwell\u2019s Center for Global Health<\/a> (CGH) is networking with local leaders on the ground to fund relief efforts where they\u2019ll make the greatest impact.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe are gathering specialized supplies that are difficult to procure locally, things like dialysis kits, trauma supplies that are now already strained in Europe because of the war in Ukraine,\u201d said Eric Cioe Pe\u00f1a, MD<\/a>, director of the CGH, who\u2019s helping spearhead these efforts.\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter the shock<\/b>\n<\/p>\n

\nDisaster relief efforts in Turkey and Syria have been continually plagued by high-magnitude aftershocks in already devastated areas, with the most recent 5.6 magnitude on Monday, compounding the crisis.\n<\/p>\n

\nNorthwell has once again aligned with international relief partners, such as M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) \u2013 more commonly known in the U.S. as Doctors Without Borders<\/a> \u2013 to provide direct medical care to survivors and people in need of basic care. The Northwell Health Turkey-Syria relief fund<\/a> was also created to bring direct equitable financial support to the disaster areas.\n<\/p>\n

\nThis was welcomed news to Abit Soylu, a <\/b>paramedic with Northwell\u2019s Center for Emergency Medical Services<\/a>, whose family lives in Turkey. Mr. Soylu lost his cousin and her son when their home collapsed in the initial quake.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIt\u2019s hard for me because I\u2019m not there and I\u2019m heartbroken here not being able to help them,\u201d he said. \u201cIt took five days for them to find them in the rubble.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nMr. Soylu was joined by <\/b>Amen Alhadi, a flight paramedic with Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) who has family in Syria and Anas Sawas, MD<\/a>, <\/b>an <\/b>emergency medicine physician at Mather Hospital<\/a> in Port Jefferson, who spoke about the limited humanitarian access into Syria from the civil war, now strained by the earthquake.\n<\/p>\n

\nAlso at the event were Onat Akin, MD<\/a>, a Northwell pathologist with family in Turkey, and Banu Aygun MD<\/a>, a pediatric oncologist at Cohen Children\u2019s Medical Center<\/a>. The two discussed the medical risks children face in that region due to the lack of access to care and clean water. Scabies and cholera can spread quickly and other illness from lack of vaccinations.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cAside from losing their homes, their schools, their friends, some of them are unfortunately orphans,\u201d Dr. Aygun said. \u201cThe physical scars are very big, but the psychological scars are much deeper.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe\u2019re a culturally dynamic health system,\u201d Dr. Cioe Pe\u00f1a said. \u201cLike in Ukraine, working with MSF and our teammates that hail from these regions will help us build sustainable relationships to get materials and funds to the right place and care for more people.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nDisaster 24\/7 on-call: Lessons learned from Ukraine<\/b>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn the weeks that followed the invasion of Ukraine, Northwell Health deployed its integrated telehealth service to provide 24\/7 assistance to health care providers to consult and offer guidance on civilian and military patient care. The program has provided more than 350 consults to clinicians caring for patients of blast injury and gunfire, to women with perinatal care needs and patients awaiting organ transplant.\n<\/p>\n

\nNorthwell looks to deploy this same strategy in Turkey and Syria and offer 24\/7 access to complement medical care there. \u201cWhen we launched this program, we quickly realized that using this as a peer-to-peer platform offered the most benefit and impact to the medical community in Ukraine,\u201d Dr. Cioe Pe\u00f1a said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe have an obligation and responsibility. It\u2019s part of the culture of Northwell: Any time anyone is in trouble \u2013 whether it\u2019s domestic or overseas \u2013 we do our best to help,\u201d Mr. Dowling said. \u201cIf we have the ability and the resources to help \u2013 and we obviously have the will \u2013 then we should help. That\u2019s why we\u2019re in the health care business. We can\u2019t always be looking internal; we have to look external.
