Data for the Index are from January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022 and come from the ESO Data Collaborative.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mms.businesswire.com\/media\/20230411005759\/en\/660125\/5\/esoEPS.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mms.businesswire.com\/media\/20230411005759\/en\/660125\/21\/esoEPS.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe ESO Fire Service Index allows us to show agencies where fires are taking place and give them an opportunity to compare that information to their own communities,\u201d said Bill Gardner, Senior Director of Fire Products at ESO. \u201cWe can determine trends within the industry so that individual agencies can create their own community risk reduction programs based on the data. During COVID, we saw a rise in residential fires and that information still stands true this year as the environment where people work has changed. As the fire service, we need to adjust our training and what we\u2019re doing in terms of prevention and code compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Key Findings Include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"bwlistdisc\">\n<li>\n<b>Fire departments, by and large, respond to more EMS calls than fire calls: <\/b>EMS incidents accounted for 68% of all incidents, while fire responses accounted for 3% of incidents. With the advent of new, more fire-resistant building materials \u2013 as well as an increase in community risk reduction programs \u2013 fire calls have been decreasing overall.<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Residential properties accounted for 80% of all fire calls:<\/b> Residential properties (one or two-family dwelling structures and multifamily dwelling properties) accounted for 80% of all fire incident locations.<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Within fire calls, the most common incident types include: <\/b>1) Structure fire (31%), 2) Outside rubbish fire (24%) and 3) Natural vegetation fire (22%). Patterns in vegetation fires may be due to changing wildland patterns or reduced wildland management, which are causing longer, more frequent and larger wildland fires.<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>In aggregate, residential properties represented the largest financial losses in fire incidents; however, property loss is likely under-documented: <\/b>Estimated property loss was $1B+, with another 268 million dollars in estimated content loss.<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Decontamination: <\/b>82% of fire incidents had at least one decontamination procedure noted. That is down by 4% compared to last year\u2019s data.
