LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The MolinaCares Accord<\/a> (\u201cMolinaCares\u201d), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Nevada<\/a> (\u201cMolina\u201d), provided grants to two local food banks to help address rising food insecurity across the state. The donations, totaling $187,000, were given to Three Square Food Bank<\/a> serving Southern Nevada and Food Bank of Northern Nevada<\/a>. Both organizations have seen a gradual increase in need this year with a recent surge due to the temporary government shut down impacting SNAP benefits.\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to Three Square Food Bank, more than 377,000 people in Southern Nevada experience food insecurity. This marks a jump of over 36,000 from the year prior, raising the local food insecurity rate to 16%. In the four months leading up to the government shutdown on October 1, the food bank experienced a 16% increase in need. Approximately 75% of those visiting a pantry for food assistance during that time were first-time visitors. Three Square Food Bank will use the MolinaCares grant to help fund its \u201cemergency response\u201d efforts during this time of high demand.\n<\/p>\n

\n\u201cThis generous donation enables us to continue the work we are doing to meet a critical need here in Southern Nevada,\u201d said Beth Martino, president and CEO at Three Square Food Bank. \u201cWe are grateful to Molina for partnering with us in our mission to improve access to food in our community.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\nFeeding America<\/a> data show food insecurity affects approximately 15% of Nevadans, which is higher than the national average. Within the Food Bank of Northern Nevada service area, the food insecurity rate has risen from 11.4% to 12.3% in the past year, and Washoe County has climbed from 12.9% to 14.0%. The Food Bank also saw an increase in visitors related to the government shutdown. To help reduce growing food insecurity, MolinaCares\u2019 donation will enable the Food Bank to provide approximately 150,000 meals.\n<\/p>\n

\nThis grant builds on Molina\u2019s investment announced earlier this year<\/a> in support of access to care. These recent grants addressing food insecurity as well as other social determinants of health such as behavioral health, maternal health and workforce development, are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Nevadans across the state and bring Molina\u2019s total giving to Nevada in 2025 to over $2M.\n<\/p>\n
